Ville Close, the Fortified Island of Concarneau in Brittany, France

The medieval fortifications Ville Shut is a fortified island of Concarneau. It stands on a prolonged island in the centre of Concarneau harbour. The walled town Ville Shut has only a few slim streets and is just a small distance from the city and port.

The origin of the Ville Close dates back to the 15th century. Throughout the next centuries, it is the centre of Concarneau. At present, with an area of 350 metres by 100 metres, Ville Shut is one particular of the most frequented web sites in Brittany and is fairly crowded in the summer months seasons. Fortunately, we explored this position in autumn during our two-7 days road journey to Brittany. There were being only a handful of individuals were being walking all-around, most locals.

See from the entrance of Ville Close Outdated Fortified Island

A several metres off the coastline in the harbour, a drawbridge connects the land and Ville Close Previous Fortified Island. But just before crossing the drawbridge, from the harbourside, I could take some terrific pics of the rocky island and the cupola-clock tower going through the coast of Concarneau.

Eager to enter the island, we did not recognize that I was standing future to an anchor. The anchor and the clock tower are the great things for a vertical photo environment. Upon leaving, we noticed this viewpoint, the most intriguing portion of Ville Shut, and as a result departed with fulfillment.

Walking on the walls of the Ville Close

The quaint drawbridge leads to the old city. Passing appropriate guiding the drawbridge, then climbing a handful of steps up, we uncovered ourselves on the medieval walls. From the two towers on the two sides of the drawbridge, I experienced wonderful sights of the fishing port and Concarneau bay. Autumn looks to be an off-year there because we have been the only people strolling on the partitions on that working day. But in the summer time seasons, when more people get there, there would be not a great deal room to share.

The japanese aspect of the island, approximately a third of the overall island, is a little hilly park, from exactly where a passenger ferry operates throughout the inlet to the reverse quay at Spot Duquesne. In many spots, stairs from old partitions direct to the floor amount.

Picturesque streets and squares

The main road Rue Vauban starts from the major entrance gate and crosses the island, connecting the square, Location Saint-Guénolé. Stone houses have been converted into eye-catching structures, shops, galleries, and restaurants. Several outlets promote Breton souvenirs and community food items and many others.

The autumn climate in Brittany is chillier than anticipated. Assumably, it would get chillier during the next 7 days on the northern coastline of Brittany, where we would continue to be, so I prepared to acquire a jacket to safe myself for the cooler temperature. Hence, I opted for a outfits store and hoped to invest in a windproof or water-resistant jacket. Following a quick look for, I realized that most jackets in this shop ended up the standard waxed Breton water-resistant coat for fishermen, a type that suits the entire loved ones and mostly differs in colour. All through the following times of our holiday, I saw this sort of apparel shops in numerous towns and even in little towns, this kind of as the fishing village Paimpol.

Most places to eat open around lunchtime. In just fifty percent an hour, most places to eat were being acquiring crowded. Soon after a brief assessment of menus from several places to eat, we went into L’Ecume de la Ville Close at the Saint-Guénolé sq.. I also requested a pork dish cooked in cider, a standard Breton dish. The food items had a sturdy flavour and boosted my urge for food.

Visiting the Fishing Museum

A handful of metres absent from the key gate is the fish museum, Musée de la Pêche. From 1850, Concarneau had produced quite a few canneries. About a hundred sardine and tuna fishing boats and about thirty factories supported the neighborhood overall economy. The museum provides fascinating info about industrial fishing and how it has evolved.

Vacation recommendations for Ville Close, the Fortified Island of Concarneau

There are many large parking parts in the harbour locations, for instance, Quai d’Aiguillon Parking and Put Du 8 Mai 1945 Parking. They are just near the entrance of Ville Close.

If you arrive from the south by car or truck, the closest parking region is close to the quay at Location Duquesne. From there, take the ferries by way of Bac du Passage to the island. The ferry fees about 1 Euro per experience.

The ideal way to examine the island is to wander at will. If you only have a several several hours in Concarneau, you need to invest the time on the island.

If you program to remain there, you can locate accommodations around Ville Close as very well. The following two accommodation are my superior picks:
